The lifeboats provided by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution are built and maintained to the highest standards. Inevitably, due to the type of work, weather conditions and frequency the boats put to sea, parts wear out or get damaged. For this reason the Royal National Lifeboat Institution maintains a fleet of reserve lifeboats. These boats can normally be despatched to a station within 24 hours, to maintain cover. A refit schedule is also in force, where lifeboats are taken off station, stripped down and rebuilt. Any worn or suspect parts are automatically replaced. A fleet of travelling mechanics are also on call 24 hours a day to come to station and fix most problems.
