POV-Person Project - Helping Out
Persistence of Vision is a FREE Ray Tracing Software, available for
download from http://www.povray.org/
The POV-Person project is aimed at providing free scene files and include files that can be used with POV-Ray to render the
image of a person. Distribution is intended to be along similar lines to POV-Ray to support the evolution of free software.
Helping out
Just want to help out a bit?
There's lots you can do.
Even if you just want to use the model you can still help by showing your images to people and
telling them how you generated them.
If you want to do a little more, then why not contribute some of your work back to the project to help add to the flexibility of the
library.
To get more deeply involved you can contact the project organiser and collaborate on the next version of the POV-Person library.
There are so many things that need improving, including the addition of new head models, the creation of all of the other parts
necessary to build a complete model, documentation of features, animation etc.
The more people join in, the more features we can add to the library.
Things to try
Here is a list of things that so far haven't been tried.
- Using the POV-Person head on the Blobman body
- Using the POV-Person head (and maybe the Blobman body) with Theresa Willis' walking.inc
- Adapting the output from the Petibonum utility (designed for an earlier release of Blobman) so that it can be used to position
POV-Person body parts.
If you try any of these things (or any other things that other POV-Person users might be interested in),
why not write up your results and we can include them here.
Contributions
As you experiment with the parameters controlling the various components of the head (e.g. the hair generator),
when you find something that works well, why not send in
a sample image and a corresponding thumbnail along with a text file that describes your parameters (and your name if you want credit).
Then we can add it to the documentation to help others learn to use the files.
You can also contribute new hair textures, hair colours, or, if you want to be more adventurous, new eyes, hair styles, teeth,
etc.
If that sounds like too much hard work, then just providing friendly comments and feedback can help to motivate the project team.
Joining the Project Team
If you've got more time than you know what to do with (or you didn't really like sleeping anyway) and want to help drive the project forward,
then feel free to contact the team at the e-mail address below.
There are lots of things to do ranging from helping to organise the project, documenting features & settings,
maintaining the web site, adding models, tools and utilities etc.
Here are just some of the things currently being planned:
- Additional face models
- Expression models
- A face and expression editor
- Modifying the hair generator 'hair.inc' to add a parting, preferably one that can be moved away from the centre line of the head.
- Creating a hair generator for long hair.
- Additional components ranging from
- Clothing to conceal the current lack of body parts
- The addition of other body parts (hands, feet, arms, legs etc.)
- Addition of a utility to seemlessly join body parts together once their positions have been defined
- Utilities to animate the person.
Important. When contributing files to this library it is critical that the origin of any object is clear and that the
free distribution of any such object is permitted. You should not therefore simply export a model or part of a model from a commercial
program and submit it to the project. Commercial models are generally copyright and distribution of derived works is often
restricted under the terms of your license to use their model.
It is important for this project that the components distributed as part of this library remain free for use both
in their original and any modified form.
