Only the broken ‘r’ in ‘motor’ on p.93 was present in a proof copy examined, though that added a further erratum to the list: the number to p.91 appearing as ‘16’. This definitely raises the possibility that there are bound copies differing in some respect from the one recorded here — which does, however, seem to represent the norm.

Inscribed on the front end-paper, in pencil: “Jeanie W. Greenshaw / (neé Milson) / (see page 159.)” and in ink: “Keep this book always / in the family (Milson)". After the author’s name on the title-page has been added in ink in the same hand: “daughter / of / Captain John / Milson’s lawyer / (see Page 159)". Pages 157-8 are intended, rather than 159. They form a fly-title to the story ‘The Conquest of Doña Jacoba’. After the printed title on the recto of the fly-title is inscribed in Jeanie Greenshaw’s hand “Printed in Blackwood’s Magazine", and a note on the authoress; on the blank verso is inscribed a key to the characters in the story, beginning: “Don Roberto Duncan = Captain John Milson, British, R.N. (my grandfather)” Loosely laid in is a biographical note on the original of one of the characters in Jeanie Greenshaw’s hand. In spite of its faults, an interesting copy, giving an insight into the workings of Gertrude Atherton’s imagination, at least near the start of her career. ‘The Splendid Idle Forties’ is a revised and enlarged edition of the 1894 volume ‘Before the Gringo Came’, two stories, ‘The Isle of Skulls’ and ‘The Head of a Priest’ being here first collected.
