IMPORTANT!

This is the ROBERT TEMPLE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ARCHIVE. It contains descriptions and notes relating to almost 18,000 titles in the fields of British and American literature, being the bulk of the stock that has passed through our hands since 1984, with the addition of a few earlier items of especial interest. Books currently in stock are not included, and it is therefore necessary to supplement your search by looking at our Current Catalogues. For the most part full bibliographical descriptions are given, though for some earlier items, catalogued when computing space was more restricted the details given are quite brief. For an account of the conventions adopted, the abbreviations used, and reference sources consulted, please see our information pages.

Please note:
The arrangement here is the same as that adopted in our current catalogues, and as there our larger files are presented in sections for ease of downloading. At the end of each section you are invited to browse the next.

[MANNING (Anne).]. The Provocations Of Madame Palissy. By The author of "Mary Powell." London: Printed for Arthur Hall, Virtue, & Co., At 25, Paternoster Row, N.D. [1853]. Sm.post 8vo; half-title not called for; two conjugate leaves of publisher's advertisements, on text-paper and almost certainly integral (v. note), precede seven-colour lithographic frontispiece by J.M. Kronheim & Co., after H. Warren, and single inset title leaf; last leaf of text a single inset; pp.[?vi]+241+[i (printer's imprint)]; publisher's inserted 24pp. Catalogue at end, dated August, 1853; jade green straight morocco cloth ruled and blocked blind on sides and spine, lettered gilt, on spine; fore-edges uncut; end-papers coated salmon pink. Front free end-paper lacking; otherwise a nice copy.

This title not in Sadleir; Wolff, 4467, describing a variant differing in make-up from the present copy by having the two text-paper advertisement leaves at the end and in being without a Catalogue, and in binding by the cloth being turquoise and of a diagonal ripple-grain. Since the Wolff copy has also an authorial presentation inscription to her sisters (dated, however, ‘Sept. 1853'), the present binding is presumably secondary - though the Wolff binding may conceivably have been a trial. Investigation of several copies suggests that the last leaf of text, signed ‘R', the two conjugate advertisements leaves, and the title leaf, were printed together completing a half sheet. The second advertisement leaf appears to have been dropped from later copies, whilst in early copies both advertisement leaves are found placed variously at the front or at the back in different binding batches.

[MANNING (Anne).]. The Provocations Of Madame Palissy. By The author of "Mary Powell." London: Printed for Arthur Hall, Virtue, & Co., At 25, Paternoster Row, N.D. [1853]. Sm.post 8vo; half-title not called for; seven-colour lithographic frontispiece by J.M. Kronheim & Co., after H. Warren, with tissue guard; title leaf, the final leaf of text, and following text-paper advertisement leaf, all single insets; pp.[ii]+241+[i (printer's imprint)]?+[ii]; dull brown straight morocco cloth ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled blind, lettered gilt, on spine; sprinkled edges; end-papers coated yellow. Nice copy.

This title not in Sadleir; Wolff, 4467, describing a variant differing in make-up from the present copy by having an second advertisement leaf at the end (conjugate with the first), and in binding by the cloth being turquoise and of a diagonal ripple-grain and the end-papers [coated] salmon pink. Copies are also known in jade green cloth, of the same grain as this, but with two conjugate advertisement leaves present at the front. In view of the date of the inscription in the present copy, and the absence of the second advertisement leaf, it has to be considered secondary. Investigation of several copies suggests that the last leaf of text, signed ‘R', the two conjugate advertisements leaves, and the title leaf, were printed together completing a half sheet, the advertisements thereby being integral. The second advertisement leaf appears to have been dropped from later copies, whilst in early copies both advertisement leaves are found placed variously at the front or at the back in different binding batches.

ROBERT TEMPLE BOOKSELLERS BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ARCHIVE, File C: Nineteenth Century General Fiction. All books first editions and first printings, except as stated.

[MANNING (Anne).]. Some account Of Mrs. Carinda Singleheart By The author of "Mary Powell." London: Printed for Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 25, Paternoster Row, 1855. Sm.post 8vo; half-title not called for; wood-engraved frontispiece signed C.P. Nicholls, on plate paper; title-page printed in red and black; integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.[iv]+305+[i (printer's imprint)]+[ii]; cherry red fine dotted diaper grain cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; end-papers coated pale yellow. Cloth of spine just a trifle darkened; small damp-stain affecting blank corner of plate; corners of some pages flexed (rather than creased), apparently by a too eager reader holding the leaves ready to turn; otherwise a nice copy.

Not a historical novel, but one of the author's contemporary tales. Written for serial publication, it starts out as though it is to be a ghost story, with a clerical brother and sister going to live in a reputedly haunted house - which is a good device to keep you reading! - and does in fact include two or three short rationalised ghost stories: but it is in essence a kind of pastoral romance. Not in Sadleir; Wolff, 4470a, recording a copy in cherry red vertically ribbed cloth blocked in black on sides and spine, lettered gilt on spine, with deep green end-papers, and an inserted publisher's catalogue at the end dated January 1855. The Wolff copy was probably secondary since the book appears to have been published for the Christmas season of 1854 and, as was usual at that time, dated ahead. In this copy l.17 on p.293 lacks the final ‘l' in ‘small'.

[MANNING (Anne).]. The Good old times. A Tale of Auvergne. By The Author of "Mary Powell." London: Printed for Arthur Hall, Virtue, & Co., 25, Paternoster Row, 1857. Post 8vo; half-title not called for; wood-engraved frontispiece; single inset title-page printed in red and black; wood-cut head and tail pieces throughout; six leaves integral advertisements at end, followed by publisher's 24pp. Catalogue dated August, 1856; pp.[vi]+275+[i (blank)]+[vi]; orange-brown straight morocco cloth, elaborately blocked blind on sides, ruled and blocked blind, lettered and with short rule, gilt, on spine; top-edges uncut, fore- and lower- edges rough-trimmed; end-papers coated pale yellow; binder's ticket of ‘Westleys & Co.' (Burn 103C2) on back paste-down. Slight mottled darkening of covers, and small damp-stain affecting upper margin of frontispiece towards gutter, but a very nice copy nonetheless.

Sadleir, 1541, recording an otherwise similar copy which he describes as being in orange morocco cloth; Wolff, 4445, not disagreeing about the colour: to our eye, orange is more yellowy.

[MANNING (Anne)]. The Ladies of Bever Hollow. A Tale of English Country Life. By the Author of "Mary Powell." In two volumes. London: Printed for Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1858. 2 Vols., f'cap 8vo; half-titles not called for; title pages printed in red and black; leaf signed ‘b' following Contents leaf in volume one, and leaf R1 in volume two both single insets; vertically fine-ribbed reddish brown cloth ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled blind, blocked and lettered gilt, lettered reddish-brown through gilt, on spine; a.e. uncuut; end-papers coated yellow. Minute and well-nigh invisible restorations to cloth at corners of spine; gilt a little dulled; otherwise, and in over-all effect, a near-fine copy.

Sadleir, 1546, recording a copy with white end-papers and cut edges powdered pinkish-brown, but otherwise similar; Wolff, 4454. The second of the author's domestic novels (the first having been published some twenty years earlier), and one of her most successful books. In our experience this first edition is now rather scarce.

ROBERT TEMPLE BOOKSELLERS BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ARCHIVE, File C: Nineteenth Century General Fiction. All books first editions and first printings, except as stated.

[MANNING (Anne).]. The Day of small things. By The author of "Mary Powell." London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 25, Paternoster Row, 1860 [i.e., Winter, 1859]. Post 8vo; advertisement leaf precedes half-title; title-page printed in scarlet and black; pp.[viii]+236; publisher's 24pp. Catalogue at end, dated November, 1859; dark maroon bead-grain cloth ruled and elaborately blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; a.e. uncut; end-papers coated pale yellow. Minute mark on cloth at head of spine, and cloth of spine very slightly faded; otherwise a fine bright copy.

Presentation copy with the author's signed holograph inscription on the half-title: "Beatrice Stebbing. / A Christmas gift from her affectionate / friend, Anne Manning. 1859. / Ita sano, et amami!" Beatrice Stebbing, later Batty, was the author of ‘An English girl's account of a Moravian Settlement in the Black Forest' which Anne Manning edited for publication in 1858. Whilst she was writing and seeing the present book through the press, she was receiving a good deal of collaborative help from Beatrice Stebbing with her next book, ‘Valentine Duval', Beatrice toiling in the British Museum to translate for her both the biography of Duval and ‘a great many of the letters' - a fact recorded in the prefatory letter to ‘Valentine Duval', which was dedicated "To Beatrice, Proceeding to Amritsir, Northern India" and published in 1860, by which time Beatrice had already begun her voyage - hence the "Ita sano, et amami" of the present inscription. The front pastedown of the present copy bears the signature of Beatrice Stebbing, the ‘Stebbing' later neatly erased and her married name added instead in a paler ink. The present work is not a historical novel, but one of Anne Manning's ‘quiet comedies of village and small town contemporary life' (Sadleir). Sadleir, 1537, recording a copy in the presentation binding of ‘full maroon embossed morocco, lettered in gold; bevelled boards, all edges gilt and patterned' and with a blank instead of the initial advertisement leaf, inscribed to Anne Manning's neice, Florence, in 1864. Given the early date of the present inscription, and the fact that the recipient was about to start for India, it is possible that it had to be given before the presentation bindings had been prepared. Wolff, 4439, records a copy with no inscription that he says was from a family source, in an otherwise similar binding of blue cloth, but with cream end-papers.

[MANNING (Ann).]. Deborah's diary. A Fragment. By the Author of Mary Powell. London: Printed for Arthur Hall, Virtue, & Co., At 25, Paternoster Row, 1860. F'cap 8vo on antique-toned paper; 4pp. integral advertisements (almost certainly printed conjugate with final gathering) precede wood-engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, and conjugate vignette title-page printed in black and red, both on plate paper, precede start of text; pp.[iv]+140 (excluding frontispiece and title leaves); publisher's inserted 24pp. Catalogue dated January, 1860 at end; deep claret bead-grain cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides, lettered blind and gilt, and with price, gilt, on front cover, blocked blind, up-lettered gilt, on spine; a.e. brick-red; end-papers coated terra-cotta; binder's ticket of Westleys & Co. on back paste-down (Ball 103 C). Title page lightly foxed, with offsetting onto first leaf; otherwise a very nice copy.

The first illustrated edition of a book first published in 1858 - and in some sense a sequel to Mary Powell, giving brief later glimpses of the home-life of Milton. An uncommon Manning title in any form. Issued at 2/-. Sadleir, 1538a, not noting that the initial advertisements are integral; Wolff, 4440, listing this edition only.

[MANNING (Anne).]. Valentine Duval: An Autobiography of the Last Century. Edited by The author of "Mary Powell." London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1860. Lge.12mo; title-page printed in red and black; wood-engraved head and tail pieces throughout; integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.viii+285+[i (blank)]+[ii]; cherry red straight morocco cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; top-edges uncut, lower-edges mainly trimmed; end-papers coated deep yellow. Small, unobtrusive, restoration to cloth at head of back joint, and insignificant rub-hole in cloth over front joint; a nice copy, nonetheless, internally fine.

Dedicated ‘To Beatrice' [Stebbing, later Batty], who did much of the donkey-work in researching the book, spending "two or three months" as the Dedication avows, in the British Museum library, translating "not only all the biography, but a great many of the letters." Anne Manning was taken to task by a reviewer in the ‘Athanaeum' for not giving credit to Miss Stebbing more fully. Printed in Winchester by Hugh Barclay. This title not in Sadleir; Wolff, under 4475, records three copies, all in "green morocco cloth, blocked in blind and gold on front [cover], in blind on back [cover], blocked and lettered in gold on spine; cream end-papers." Two of these were from a family source (one being a presentation copy), and this may have been a special ‘author's' binding. The present volume bears the price ‘7/6' upon the spine.

[MANNING (Anne)]. Family pictures, Etc. etc. By The author of "Mary Powell." London: Arthur Hall, Virtue and Co., 25, Paternoster Row, 1861 [i.e., Winter, 1860]. Post 8vo; title-page printed in light red and black; integral advertisement leaf followed by publisher's inserted 24pp. Catalogue at end, dated May, 1860; pp.[viii]+261+[i (printer's imprint)]+[ii]; magenta horizontal straight morocco effect cloth (v. note) ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; top- and fore- edges uncut, lower-edges rough-trimmed; end-papers coated yellow; binder's ticket of Westleys & Co. [Ball, 103 C2] on back paste-down. Slight fading of covers, and gilt a little dull; front end-papers renewed at an early date with paper coated a slightly deeper yellow; otherwise a virtually fine and crisp copy.

The author's name appears in full at the end of the author's prefatory note on p.[v]. The cloth grain is in fact not a simple straight morocco, but on close examination rather complicated, involving a patterning of the morocco graining that from some angles gives the effect of broad diagonal ribs. This title not in Sadleir; Wolff, 4444, recording a similar copy with a presentation inscription from the author dated ‘Dec. 17, 1860'.

[MANNING (Anne).]. Miss Biddy Frobisher: A salt-water story By The author of ‘Mary Powell.' London, Sampson Low, son, and Marston, Milton House, Ludgate Hill, 1866. (The right of Translation is reserved.) Final blank; woodcut head and tail pieces and initial letters to the chapters throughout; pp.[iv]+298+[ii]; bevelled green sand-grain cloth, ruled blind on sides, gilt on spine, blocked and lettered gilt on front cover and spine; a.e. uncut; endppapers faced chocolate. Label removed from back free end-paper leaving two or three insignificant scuffs; a little scattered light foxing and dusting; but a nice copy nonetheless.

Sadleir, 1551, listing a presentation copy in an apparerntly lighter shade of cloth (that of the present copy being of a bright but bluish green, his ‘grass-green'), and with all the blocking as well as the ruling in blind; Wolff, 4460, listing a presentation copy apparently similar to the copy offered here. Both the Wolff and Sadleir copies had a presentation inscription dated New Year's Day, Wolff recording his as 1866, Sadleir his as 1865, the latter being almost certainly an error - on either the part of Sadleir or the author!

MANSFORD (Charles J.). The adventures Of Mark Paton And other Stories. London, S.W. Partridge & Co., 8 & 9, Paternoster Row, 1898. Sm.cr.8vo; half-tone frontispiece; pp.320; publisher's inserted 32pp. Catalogue at end; scarlet buckram, blocked black, yellow, green, and tan, lettered black, black-shadowed, and black-outlined, gilt on front cover, blocked gilt, black, yellow, green, and tan, ruled black, lettered gilt and scarlet-through-gilt, embossed with lettering black, on spine; poor quality pale cream end-papers. Blind prize-stamp on back cover, and covers slightly marked; end-papers with several small ownership rubber-stamps and prize label, embrowned and chipped a trifle on one corner; poor quality paper of Catalogue embrowned; text in general nice.

Indian and eastern stories, similar to those in Mansford's earlier volume, ‘Shafts from an Eastern Quiver'. The correct first printing, printed on good quality paper and with a dated title-page, but the Catalogue lists this title without the asterisk denoting it is a new issue, and would appear to be from a slightly later date. According to the Catalogue issued as a volume in the ‘Red Mountain' series. Not in Sadleir or Wolff.

Boardman, Bishop's Stortford, on each front paste-down. Spines slightly faded; otherwise a fine copy

Sadleir 1591/1591a records two binding variants, the second of which, in brown fine diaper cloth, in some respects resembles this. The present copy is probably a very early rebind, but conceivably represents a provincial binding up of publisher's sheets.

MARRYAT (Captain, R.N.). The pirate, And The three cutters. Illustrated with Twenty splendid Engravings From drawings by Clarkson Stanfield, Esq., R.A. A. Fullarton and Co., 106, Newgate Street, London; 67, Abbey Street, Dublin; Stead's Place, Leith Walk, and 5, Nicholson Street, Edinburgh, 1845. Med.8vo; half-title not called for; steel engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue guard; engraved and letterpress title-pages; eighteen fine steel-engraved plates, with tissue guards; pp.[vi]+362; dark olive green fine diaper cloth, blocked blind and pictorially gilt on sides, elaborately blocked, lettered, and with short rule, gilt on spine; a.e.g.; end-papers coated yellow. Minimal wear to extreme tail-band; a few plates lightly foxed, almost exclusively on margins, but with some light offsetting onto facing pages; light foxing of prelims. and last two leaves; effectively, nonetheless, a fine copy.

First Fullarton edition of a book published originally by Longmans in 1836 - the plates being those of the original edition, with Fullarton's imprint added and the date removed, whilst the text has been reset. Sadleir, 1594e, records this as the first edition in parts: the present copy, as is evidenced by stab-holes, consisting in fact of bound parts, in a publisher's case. This edition not in Wolff.

MARRYAT (Captain, R.N.). The Privateer's-man One Hundred Years ago. Volume I [II]. Longman, Brown, Green, & Longmans, 1846. 2 Vols., f'cap 8vo; publisher's inserted 32pp. Catalogue at end of volume one dated ‘March 31, 1852'; printer's imprint leaf at end of volume two; vertically fine ribbed greyish purple cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides and spine, lettered and with short rule gilt on spine; t.e. uncut, others rough trimmed; end-papers coated yellow; binder's ticket of ‘Westleys & Co., Friar Street' on back paste-down of volume one. Some slight fading of covers; a little scattered light dusting and foxing; in general a nice copy, nonetheless.

Sadleir, 1596, recording an apparently similar copy in purple-grey horizontally ribbed cloth, with a 32pp. Catalogue at end of volume one, dated May 1846; Wolff, 4535, recording a copy in vertically ribbed cloth, as here. Number eleven on Sadleir's schedule of comparative scarcities. Rather a curious production, it nowhere being stated either of how many volumes the work consists, or that it has finally been completed - volume two stating merely at the foot of the last page of text: ‘END OF VOL. II'!

The end-papers list the series to the penultimate volume (no.125). Originally published in 1837 in three volumes with the main and sub-titles here reversed.

MARSH (Richard). The duke and the damsel. C. Arthur Pearson Limited, 1897. Post 8vo; blank before half-title; title-page printed in blue-green and black; pp.247-8 (signature 17.4) present in two states; dark green buckram, blocked light yellow-green and gilt, lettered gilt, on front cover, lettered, and with short rule gilt, on spine. A very good copy only.

P.248 is the final page of text, and begins with the drop heading of a new chapter. In its original setting this drop heading is set the normal distance down the page, and the page ends, as usual, with a page number, implying that the text continues on the next leaf. In the revised setting, the drop heading is dropped less far, and the words ‘THE END' appear at the foot of the page in stead of the page number. The text is the same in both. Evidently the novel over-ran its allotted space, and the publisher simply left out the last few pages. The ending had by implication been achieved, but the final sentence is somewhat mysterious. One wonders whether some accident such as this might not have given rise to a whole new school of fiction!

A fine, bright, copy.

Issued as volume 7. of Hogg's two shilling series of ‘Illustrated Books for Young Readers'. The final advertisement page lists the series to volume 9., but this is correct since according to the English Catalogue of Books these three volumes were all issued in November 1861. The text is printed on antique toned paper, the plates on pale yellow paper. Emma Marshall's first book. CBEL, III, p.568; Not in Sadleir or Wolff. MARSHALL (Emma). Constantia Carew: An autobiography. By Emma Marshall Author of ‘Benvenuta,' ‘Life's Aftermath,' ‘Mrs. Mainwaring's Journal,' Etc., etc. Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday, 54, Fleet Street, London, 1883. (All Rights Reserved). Inserted engraved frontispiece signed monogram FJ; two leaves integral advertisements, followed by publisher's inserted 16pp. undated catalogue, at end; pp.[iv]+360+[iv]; royal blue patterned sand-grain cloth, ruled black, blocked and lettered gilt, on front cover and spine; end-papers faced pale yellow. Two small marks on top-edges, and light marking of back end-papers; otherwise a very nice copy.

The final gathering contains six leaves, the first two leaves of the prelims., which are not included in the numbering, having evidently been printed conjugate with them. The publisher's File Copy, with their rubber stamp to this effect on the front end-paper, the half-title, and the fore-edges. Purchased from the Frederick Warne file, Warne's having at some point absorbed Seeley & Co. and evidently selected a file copy from the current stock: it is clearly a later issue, the integral advertisements listing twenty titles by Mrs. Marshall, all of them earlier than this, whilst the inserted advertisements list some thirty-five, the last dating from 1892 - though neither list is exhaustive for its date, even as far as Seeley & Co. is concerned. In our experience quite a difficult title. Not in Sadleir or Wolff.

(Late of 54 Fleet Street)', this dating apparently from c.1886; cherry red sand grain cloth ruled blind on sides and spine, blocked and lettered gilt, lettered cherry red through gilt, on front cover, blocked, lettered, and with short rule, gilt, on spine; end-papers glazed pale yellow. Very slight fading of spine; slight marking of front paste-down; a little very light foxing passim; otherwise, and in general effect, a nice copy.

MATHERS (Helen). "Cherry ripe!" A Romance By the author of "Comin' Thro' The Rye," "The Token Of The Silver Lily." In three volumes. Richard Bentley and Son, 1878. 3 Vols. Half-titles not called for; diagonally fine ribbed cherry-red cloth, ruled blind on back cover, ruled, blocked, and lettered black on front cover, gilt on spine; end-papers coated yellow. Gilt a little dull on two spines, and slight discolouration of back cover in volume three; otherwise, and in general, a fine copy.

Sadleir 1655. The Sadleir copy, which had been carefully preserved all its life in the dry darkness of the Bentley file, also showed some discolouration of the back cover in volume three, which he attributed to paste action. In the present copy the gilt on the spines of volumes two and three seems originally to have been less deeply impressed than that on the spine of volume one, with the result that it now appears less bright. The author's name is given only on the spines.

MATHERS (Helen). Becky. C. Arthur Pearson, Limited, 1900. Advertisement leaf before half-title, another following text, both integral; pp.374+[ii]; 32pp. publisher's inserted catalogue, dated April, 1900 at end; pale apple green linen effect cloth, ruled magenta and orange, blocked pictorially magenta, orange, and white, lettered magenta, on front cover, lettered magenta and magenta-outlined orange on spine. A nice copy of a scarce title.

This title not in Sadleir - or the Hubin listings, though it includes a murder, and an attempted murder and theft. Chiefly, however, it is a thoughtful love story of rather an unconventional type, interesting for its picture of advanced ‘90s feminine attitudes, and possibly worth reprinting. The following minor passage between the [unmarried] heroine and her brother in a London drawing-room perhaps gives the flavour of the whole: ‘"Walter!" cried out Becky, "you're married? And when I thought the boys of our family were just as clever at keeping out of matrimony as the girls at getting into it!" "Over there," said Walter, hiding some shyness in the jug [of ale], "if a man and a woman agree to keep true to each other, they're married - just as long as they do," he added conclusively; "and of course my Tolly and I DO keep true. I haven't seen her for a year or more, and shan't see her for another. There's all that guano to be got out; it's a big thing," he added simply. "And I've named my little girl after you - " "Walter!" cried Becky again, struck by something in his face, "wh- what colour is she?" "Well," said Walter, with a large air of toleration, "she ain't exactly white!" Becky sat down and laughed till she nearly cried. "Is she - is she like you?" she inquired at last, scanning Walter's weather-beaten face, with the illuminating light of a Hottentot lady in the background, for some visual notion of the baby. "You'll see," said Walter nodding, "because I'm going to send her home to you to be educated."'

MATHEWS (William, Author of "The Heir of Vallis."). The two homes. In three volumes. Smith, Elder and Co., 65, Cornhill, 1859. 3 Vols., bound in one, as issued; half-titles not called for, at least in this issue; imprint leaf at end of volume one; integral advertisement leaf at end of volume three; pp.[ii]+[286 (last page blank)]+[ii]; [ii]+296; [ii]+[234 (last page bearing printer's imprint)]+[ii]; brown patterned sand-grain cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; t.e. uncut; end-papers coated pale yellow. Neat repair to cloth over back joint; end-papers strengthened with matching paper; otherwise, and in general effect, a very nice, bright, copy.

Not in Sadleir or Wolff. The spine bears the price ‘31s 6d', the same as the three volume edition, which suggests that this issue in one volume was not a remainder. A love story, with a background of commerce - including railway speculation, and failure - set variously in London and Madeira. A peculiarity of this title is that whilst the left-hand headlines throughout bear the title ‘The Two Homes', the right hand ones provide a summary of the contents of each pair of leaves - somewhat of a manic feat of editing!
