A very little scattered foxing and one short marginal tear; otherwise a nice copy. Three scarce works in one volume.

An interesting collection. ‘Turpin’s Ride to York’, which is based upon Ainsworth’s ‘Rookwood’ (1834) appears to exist for the sake of the lithographic plates. Published by the lithographer, this edition appears to be unrecorded, though another edition was published by Glover with a letterpress title-page, dated 1839, and a vignette title-page and seven plates as here, but with a variant collation, [ii]+30. The Glover edition was issued as Part 1 of ‘The Illustrated Library of Romance’. It seems probable that the lithographer’s own edition would have had precedence, and we have dated it speculatively as 1838. The present edition is not on COPAC, which does, however, record Cambridge and Manchester locations for the Glover edition, of which there is also a British Library copy. ‘William Tell’ occurs in two editions, both published by George Peirce, one in twenty-eight numbers, as here, and one in twenty-four. There is some confusion between the two. Summers, p.559, records both printings as: “Paine, c.1840 24 penny parts. Also in 28 nos. pub. G.Pierce 1844.” Not only here does he confuse ‘parts’ with numbers and mis-spell Peirce’s name, he almost almost certainly mis-reads his own handwriting and transcribes ‘Paine’ for ‘Peirce’. Copac records only the Oxford and British Library copies of the twenty-eight number printing, and only the Oxford copy of the shorter one, Oxford dating both printings to [1841], whilst the British Library, possibly following Summers, dates the twenty-eight number printing as [?1844]. The confusion seems to have arisen because both printings of ‘William Tell’ were followed by an issue of ‘Hofer’ and the only edition of ‘Hofer’ recorded is the one dated 1845. The advertisements at the end of the present copy of ‘William Tell’ list two works as forthcoming, ‘Hofer’ (as a “Companion to ‘William Tell’") and ‘Richard Coeur de Lion’, the latter being only known in an edition dated by Summers, p.478, as “c.1840". The two things cancel out, but there is a great difference in the style in which the present ‘William Tell’ is printed from that in which ‘Hofer’ is printed, the former harking back to the penny dreadfuls of the 1830s and the latter suggestive of the simpler style that by the mid-1840s was coming in. It is also the case that the 1845 ‘Hofer’ was issued anonymously, as was the twenty-four number ‘William Tell’, whilst the present copy bears the author’s name. Our own conclusion tends to be that the present printing dates from 1841, and the shorter version from 1844. British Library and Oxford copies of ‘William Tell’ only on COPAC (neither noticing the plates); and the Britsh Library copy only of ‘Hofer’, giving the author’s name erroneously as “Hoffer, Andreas” instead of J.H. Newton; Summers, pp.113 and 360.

The British Library copy, not obtained until after 1955, is the only one listed in NSTC. It differs from the present copy in that both title-pages contain ms. additions including the substitution of the imprint ‘Darton & Hodge’ for the original imprint, and is therefore presumably of a later issue than the present copy, which is itself secondary: as is shown by the Darton & Co. imprint on the catalogue and end-papers. A story of the invasion of the Inca empire by the Spanish.

A difficult cloth, very light-sensitive, used also on the same author’s ‘Under the Rose’: the present copy is exceptionally nice. Turner, 21, calling the end-papers ‘black’, which they very nearly are; Sadleir, 51, recording a copy in the dust-wrapper (!), also calls the end-papers ‘black’, and describes the front cover lettering as ‘brown’: it is equivocal; not in the extensive Wolff collection of Anstey’s works — and therefore presumably scarce: it is also the first copy we have had. Fictional dramatic sketches or ‘dialogues’ — a form that had a vogue at about this time.

The second of two volumes, issued originally in monthly numbers in 1836 and 1837, and apparently quite scarce, the present copy, as evidenced by stab-holes, bound up from the parts. Not in Sadleir or Wolff; only the University of London copy in COPAC; Eckel, ‘First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens’, pp.137 — 9. Eckel does not give a collation of the parts, and appears not to have been aware that prelims. were issued for binding the parts issue: presumably with numbers seven and fourteen. He does call, however, for a half-title to be present in the cloth issue. Some contributions are anonymous, but named or indicated contributors to this second volume include Douglas Jerrold, J.S. Coyne, Alex. Campbell, Sheridan Knowles, Maurice Harcourt, Edward Mayhew, Edward Oliver, W.H. Wills, C. Whitehead, James Ollier, [Thomas Gaspey], [Edward Smallwood], etc. There is no list of plates, but they marked to face pp.46, 56, 59, 88, 117, 157, 183, 205, 235, 243, 286, 301, 313, and 327, and are here so bound in.

Perhaps not visible in the Sadleir copy, but visible here, the spine imprint to part 19 reads “Printed and Published by T.L. Holt, 266, Strand, and J. Cunningham, 7, Crown-court, Fleet Street” whilst that to the remaining parts give Holt’s name alone: it would appear that Holt printed and Cunningham (who was not a printer) shared the cost. This would appear to answer Sadleir’s query concerning the relationship between the two firms.

According to the prefatory Advertisement, dated Bonchurch, [Isle of Wight,] December 9th, 1847: “This little volume had its origin in the following circumstance. It was suggested, as a Christmas amusement, that one of a party should draw a series of sketches, which the rest should severally interweave into some short story or description. Subsequently, a proposal was made that a volume, so framed, should be published, with a view to increasing the funds for the erection of a church and schools at Bonchurch, in which all the contributors felt a common interest. The original of the plan has been faithfully adhered to: the engravings, therefore, are not illustrations of the letterpress, but the letterpress of the engravings. The Sketches themselves are, in fact, views of actual scenes, and were finished before they were submitted to the writers. It was, however, left to their option to assign to each of them either the real or a fictitious name, and to arrange the series in any order they pleased.” The author of ‘Amy Herbert’ was Elizabeth Missing Sewell; that of ‘Hawkstone’ the Rev. William Sewell; that of ‘The Old Man’s Home’ was the Rev. William Adams, also of Bonchurch; we have not identified the artist of the very Ruskinesque plates. This title not in Sadleir; Wolff, 6261, erroneously recording the name of the lithographers of the plates as ‘L. and N.’ instead of ‘M. and N.’ Hanhart. The Wolff copy was from an earlier binding batch than the present one, and had a 32pp. publisher’s catalogue dated October 1847 bound in at the end: the present copy, which is without the catalogue, has an ownership inscription on the front end-paper dated ‘March 27th. 1848’.

One of three fictional works by Henry Noel Humphreys in which Thomas Wright and James Orchard Halliwell are said to have collaborated. In the present copy the advertisement leaf is bound up with its conjugates at the start of volume two: in another copy reported it had been separated and bound in at the end. This is probably without significance, and either variant may be reckoned as first issue: later copies were bound up two volumes in one, and trimmed to a much smaller format. Sadleir’s copy was in lilac wrappers, was printed on the spine as well as on the front wrapper, and apparently carried series advertisements, running to number eight, which caused him to speculate that this may have been the total number issued. If the note on the signatures in the present volume can be trusted, this is number 11. Described on the cover as ‘a Novelette’. Fiction in paper wrappers from this period is scarce, especially in such fine condition as here.

A well written novel after the Hannah Maria Jones/Charles Dickens model, with a well-constructed if mildly melodramatic plot. Includes one short but good detective episode, and an interesting discussion of contemporary English and continental schools of painting. Planned as a three-decker, it is difficult to see why it did not find a publisher in London or Edinburgh as it is far better than many of the novels that were being issued from those sources at the time — unless it were considered a little too old-fashioned for the contemporary library trade. It could easily indeed have been written in the 1860s as far as concerns the structure and technique. Printed in Dundee. The other work mentioned on the title-page, “Friend or Foe", appears to have been an 18mo pamphlet published at 3d. in the preceding year. The author was to publish at least two more full-length novels before 1900, both with a setting of Galloway. Not in Sadleir, Wolff, or Summers.

First published earlier the same year. An epistolary novel concerned with royal scandals, claiming to be based on “the abominable and slanderous volume, known by the name of ‘The Delicate Investigation’” which, according to the epigraph in the present volumes, was “printed by Mr. Edwards in 1807 but never published, with W. Lindsell’s name as the Seller of the same on the title-page", but which in fact was by agreement and for a consideration then suppressed. This Second Edition of Ashe’s work includes an additional Preface in which he notes that he “has expunged a few passages, introduced a few others, and so far corrected the whole as to render it more worthy of the public eye.” The ‘Allen’ of the imprint would appear to be M. Allen, who also printed the volumes. Block, p.11, recording only the first edition; Wolff, 187, recording a mixed issue in the original boards in which volumes one and two are of the first edition, and volume three of the second edition; not in Summers or Sadleir. Wolff’s statement that he is unable to tell which edition his first volume belongs to since is has no title-page is evidently to be discounted as due to ignorance: it would appear not to have had the brief Preface to the Second Edition on p.x — and hence must have belonged to the first edition. In view of the advertised revisions it is perhaps worth remarking that Wolff’s first edition of the first two volumes have the same collation as the present copy.

Despite the title, purely a novel — though the early reader who bequeathed the notes evidently didn’t realise this! Not in Sadleir; Wolff, 208, records a copy in dark green cloth, and with an errata slip bound in bettween pp.[xxiv] and [1] in volume one, which has clearly never been present here. We believe the present issue to be the primary one.

Apparently scarce. Sadleir 133 et seq. assumes that this title was first issued as part of Ballantyne’s Miscellany. The inserted advertisements at the end of the present copy bear the same date as the title-page and Preface, making clear its actual date of issue, whilst there is no reference to Ballantyne’s Miscellany anywhere on or in the book except for an advertisement for it on the second page of the integral advertisement leaf as ‘13 Vols., 1/- each’ (as with Sadleir 133a), this title being advertised on the first page of the inserted advertisements as ‘2s. 6d. cloth’. According to Sadleir, the Miscellany initially ran to sixteen titles, the present title being issued eventually as Vol.14. It was included in the third volume of the 1873 — 5 collected edition of the Miscellany, and appeared as Vol.14 of the third and fourth separate volume editions of 1874 — 5 and 1883 — 6 (Sadleir, 133c and 133d). The present copy is of the actual first edition, and was unknown to Sadleir. Quayle, 44b, describing the cloth grain simply as ‘sand’, and noting that the earliest issue (44a) had the advertisements dated June rather than October. Quayle also records a secondary binding of ‘fine dotted diaper cloth’, as 44c. Not in Wolff.

Sadleir, 121, describing an otherwise similar copy in brown cloth, with the gilt-and-red-through-gilt outlined black lettering of the title on the front cover simply brown-through-gilt, as also the embossed red-cased-black-through-gilt lettering of the title on the spine. Red would seem to be the natural colour for this title, however, and since the blocking of the lettering on this copy is more expensive to produce than that on the Sadleir copy, the suspicion must be raised that the binding of his copy was in fact secondary. Sadleir implies that later issued copies had the central ornament on the back cover replaced by a publisher’s monogram, though this did not apply to his copy, and may apply in fact only to later printings. Quayle, 61, recording three issues, all with an undated catalogue, 16pp., inserted at the end. Unusually, for this volume Quayle does not mention the colour of the end-papers. The first of Ballantyne’s juvenile novels to be issued in full cr.8vo format and the first appearance of what Sadleir designates the second of Nisbet’s standard binding styles for his works. By no means a common title, in our experience. Not in Wolff.

The present copy, which consists of the same sheets, but with the titles and half-titles removed and a cancel title tipped-in at the start of the first volume, is both the second issue and the first under this title. Apart from a story contributed to the ‘Dublin University Magazine’, the first book published by Michael Banim under his own name after the death of his brother. The Oxford copy only of this issue on COPAC, and the Oxford, British Library, and Trinity College Dublin copies of the two volume issue; Sadleir, 152, listing the two volume issue, and referring to this; Wolff, 235, and NCBEL, 3: 709, both listing only the two volume issue.

The correct (and rather scarce) first printing, bound up from the original parts, as is evidenced by stab-holes, and published by How and Parsons. Of the etched plates, eight are signed by William (or ‘W’) Lee, four by W.J. Huggins, one by E. Duncan, five and the engraved title-page by Robert Cruikshank, the remaining four being unattributed. The wood-engravings in the text are mostly not signed, though named artists include W. Lee, S. Sly, and Percy Cruikes. There is no list of illustrations, but the plates are here bound in to face pp.7, 19, 33, 49, 67, 96, 108, 121, 124, 129, 130, 167, 189, 195, 221, 231, 259, 292, 312, 320, 327, and 369. Page 157 is here misnumbered ‘751’. This title not in Sadleir; Block, p.14, recording only the later edition published by Willoughby; Wolff, 57, recording the later How & Parsons issue in cloth. The ‘fine ship pictures’ mentioned by Wolff are all by W.J. Huggins.
