Hillhead is positioned at the end of a private country
lane and is set on a hillside with panoramic views of the
surrounding countryside, Carn Brea Hill and the sea in
the distance. The area of Carn Brea is rich in history,
dating back over 5000 years to prehistoric settlements in
the form of neolithic hut circles, iron age hill forts &
tombs and more recent, amidst giant boulders, a small
medieval castle, (seen right) used as a restaurant. Now it
is a conservation --world heritage designated area for its
tin & copper mining history. Below Hillhead runs the
mineral tramway used in the past for transporting the tin
ore and now part of an extensive footpath, cycle-path
and bridle way network, recently resurfaced &
improved. The peaceful setting is an ideal base from
which to explore West Cornwall. Close by is St. Ives, a
picturesque haven for artists, the market town of
Penzance with St, Michaels mount, the natural harbour of Falmouth and the city of Truro, famed for its
cathedral. Coastal beaches are but a short drive to the north or south coasts. The Animals
The field in front of the farm has stables with some
small farm animals, kept as pets, and ponies. Ed &
Ellen, the caretakers/owners, enjoy sharing the animals
with the children who join in with all the rituals of
talking to the pigs and 'mucking out' in the morning to
feeding and brushing in the evening, after which, in
return for their help, they all have a pony ride.
For those interested in:
Local walking trails run below Hillhead.
Also, Ed & Ellen are quite knowledgeable about Cornwall having lived at Hillhead for 20 years and are happy to go for walks with their guests (with of course a scenic tea-room or pub at the end!) to show them the spectacular scenery of Cornwall's coasts & estuaries.
Visits to sacred sites, holy wells, ancient churches, and Standing stones can be arranged with the possibility of 'having a go' at dowsing for leylines (earth energy lines) that usually run through these ancient sites.
Mountain bikes with helmets & maps can be hired to explore the mineral tramway trails, and an easy cycle ride to Portreath beach can be enjoyed.
The equestrian centre nearby (10 mins walk from Hillhead) organizes short hacks & day-rides through open hills & woodlands to the beach, all year round. Novice & nervous riders a specialty.
Excursions into tin-mines and demonstrations of the journey from rock to metal can be arranged.
Tai-chi, Reiki, Kinesiology, Acupuncture, Faith healing, colour-therapy, and creative painting treatments/classes can be attended close by.
Famous surfing beaches like Porthtowan, Gwithian & Newquay are 15-20 mins drive away. For wind surfers there is also Stithians lake, the most consistently windy inland ware in England, located 150 meters above sea level.
